The foundational flaw of Evolutionary Game Theory (EGT) lies in a subtle but profound ontological inversion: it mistakes biology’s local workaround for nature’s primitive law. Standard EGT formalizes natural selection by assuming pre-existing players, strategies, and payoff matrices, evaluating success through the optimization of reproductive fitness ($W$) via tools like the replicator dynamics equation. In doing so, EGT converts Darwin’s original insight, a backward-looking, historical elimination filter based on differential persistence, into a forward-looking, quasi-teleological economic program. It treats organisms as utility-maximizing agents competing within a static game, ignoring the physical reality that the “game” itself, along with its boundary conditions and strategy spaces, is dynamically constructed, altered, and destroyed by underlying physical and thermodynamic constraints long before any payoff matrix can be calculated.
At a deeper physical level, the irreducible primitive of evolutionary processes is not reproductive fitness, but persistence ($\tau$), the temporal continuity of structure, information, or dissipative organization against entropic decay. Replication is not the fundamental goal of nature; it is merely a secondary, biological workaround deployed by fragile physical systems that cannot maintain indefinite somatic stability. When game theorists defend fitness as a mere operational proxy for long-term persistence, the defense breaks down because the proxy operates asymmetrically. A fitness-centric model cannot naturally account for non-replicative persistence, such as metabolic homeostasis, somatic repair, horizontal gene transfer, or symbiotic network maintenance, and it falsely models the replicator equation inside a closed, zero-sum probability space ($\sum x_i = 1$) that fails to capture open, non-equilibrium systems. By restoring persistence ($\tau$) as the true primitive and placing reproductive fitness ($W$) in its proper context as a local biological implementation, we move from viewing natural selection as an artificial game of strategy optimization back to understanding it as nature’s fundamental filter for structural continuity.
