GPT-5.6 Explained: 3 Models: 91.9% Benchmark, 750 Tokens/Sec, $30 Per 1K

GPT-5.6 just launched — and almost nobody can actually use it. OpenAI shipped it to roughly twenty vetted partners after letting the U.S. government preview it first, and the real story isn’t the 91.9% benchmark headline. It’s that GPT-5.6 is secretly three models — Sol, Terra, and Luna — and that this one shipped under government review at all.

I read the system cards so you don’t have to. In this breakdown I separate which of OpenAI’s benchmark claims hold up from the ones that deserve an asterisk: the 91.9% Terminal-Bench score that only Sol’s multi-agent Ultra mode hit, the 750 tokens-per-second Cerebras claim, the $30-per-1K-output flagship pricing, and the quiet detail where the "cheaper, dumber" Luna actually outscored the "balanced" Terra. Every impressive number here came from OpenAI’s own charts — so we treat them as the vendor’s best case until independent benchmarks land.

We get into the tiers and when each one actually pays for itself, the new Max and Ultra reasoning knobs, the GeneBench efficiency claim, the cybersecurity capabilities that triggered the government review, the safety stack, and a practical migration plan if you’re on GPT-5.x today.
Drop a comment: would you pay the Sol premium, or does Terra cover most of what you do?
