Sam Altman’s Screenless AI Device Could Replace Your Phone

OpenAI paid roughly $6.5 billion in stock for a hardware startup with about 55 employees — around $118 million per person — and the public still hasn’t seen the device they were hired to build.

What we do know is stranger than most of the rumors. OpenAI has never officially described its first Jony Ive-designed AI device, and some of the clearest details about it only became public because of trademark and legal battles. Those court filings also directly contradict several popular claims about what OpenAI is building.

On May 21, 2025, OpenAI announced its acquisition of io Products, the hardware company founded by legendary Apple designer Jony Ive alongside former Apple designers Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey, and Tang Tan. The widely reported $6.5 billion valuation was an all-stock deal, and the acquisition closed in July 2025.

The talent involved is significant. Tang Tan, who previously led iPhone and Apple Watch design work, became OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer according to Apple’s lawsuit filings. Evans Hankey, Apple’s former industrial design leader, is also deeply involved, alongside a growing group of former Apple engineers and designers.

But what are they actually making?

The strongest clues came from OpenAI’s trademark dispute with AI audio company iyO. In sworn declarations, Tang Tan said the prototype is “not an in-ear device, nor a wearable device,” while Evans Hankey said there are no current plans for a custom-molded earpiece product.

That makes the widely circulated OpenAI earbud, behind-the-ear “Sweetpea,” and AI necklace rumors extremely difficult to reconcile with OpenAI’s own court filings.

Credible reporting instead points toward something screenless. Wired reported that a prototype can sit on a desk alongside a phone and laptop, while Axios reported that pocketable prototypes exist and that Sam Altman has internally described the concept as a third core device alongside your phone and laptop.

That still leaves enormous gaps. OpenAI hasn’t confirmed cameras, sensors, battery life, chipset, exact dimensions, pricing, or even the product’s final name. A voice-first interface implies microphones and some form of audio output, while heavy cloud dependence seems likely, but those remain inferences rather than announced specifications.

And hardware may be strategically important for a much bigger reason.

OpenAI is increasingly focused on AI agents that remember context, use tools, and continue working without constant prompting. Owning the hardware could give OpenAI control over the microphones, sensors, firmware, interface, and distribution layer instead of operating entirely inside ecosystems controlled by Apple and Google.

That makes OpenAI’s escalating conflict with Apple especially interesting.

In July 2026, Apple sued OpenAI, io Products, Tang Tan, and former Apple engineer Chang Liu, alleging trade-secret theft connected to OpenAI’s push into consumer hardware. OpenAI denies using stolen information, and no court had ruled on the merits at the point covered in this video. The allegations should not be confused with proven facts.

But even with billions of dollars and some of Apple’s best former designers, OpenAI faces a more fundamental challenge: making a screenless AI device people actually want.

Humane’s AI Pin already demonstrated how difficult that category can be. Cloud latency, connectivity, battery consumption, privacy, bystander consent, and basic interface questions become critical when a device is potentially always listening but has no conventional display.

How do you know when it’s listening? How do you confirm sensitive actions? What happens when connectivity disappears? And most importantly: what can this device do that your phone cannot?

Timing is becoming clearer, but only slightly. OpenAI’s Chris Lehane said the company was targeting an unveiling in the second half of 2026, while a later court filing reportedly indicated the device would not ship before the end of February 2027. That could mean a late-2026 reveal followed by customer shipments in 2027.

Until OpenAI finally shows the hardware, separate what’s confirmed from what’s merely reported — and what’s simply internet speculation.
