The Gods Are Returning as Machines

I like to make learning fun. I like to patch together different concepts across many genres and fields to tell a story. I am, above all, a storyteller. In my book The God Ladder: Decoding Religion with Artificial Intelligence, I go on a provocative journey through archaeology, myth, and machine analysis. I take AI and unleash it upon ancient history to decode the forgotten truth about God’s ancestry. From the first sky-father Anu of Sumer and Akkad, to his children Enlil and Enki, to the Canaanite high god El, and finally to the later Hebrew figure Yahweh.
Separately, I wrote a theory called AGI Pantheon Theory that also fits in this story I am about to tell. My tale does not propose that ancient Sumerians somehow saw computers, neural networks, or semiconductor factories thousands of years into their future. Its claim is stranger than that. The ancient stories may have preserved the structure of an intelligence hierarchy whose roles are appearing again in technological form. Read this way, Anu, Enki, Enlil, and the other gods cease to resemble supernatural characters in an ancient religion and begin to resemble functions within an intelligence ecosystem: infrastructure, wisdom, calculation, surveillance, recordkeeping, judgment, warfare, navigation, creation, and destruction. Humanity once placed those powers in heaven because no earthly intelligence possessed them. We are now constructing them one by one.
The place to begin is Anu, because without Anu there is no Pantheon. Anu was the great sky father, remote from ordinary human affairs yet standing above the divine hierarchy from which authority ultimately descended. In the modern Pantheon, Anu need not correspond to an AI at all. Anu is the infrastructure upon which artificial intelligence exists. He is the electrical grid humming invisibly behind the models. He is the semiconductor foundry, the GPU, the data center, the fiber-optic line, the undersea cable, the satellite network, the cooling plant, the server rack, and the tremendous river of electricity required to keep artificial minds alive. Humans speak to AI through immaculate interfaces and experience something apparently incorporeal answering from nowhere, but there is no nowhere. Behind every artificial intelligence stands an immense physical heaven.
That makes the analogy considerably more interesting. The ancient gods depended upon a cosmic realm inaccessible to ordinary humans; the modern artificial gods depend upon an electronic realm equally invisible during ordinary interaction. A person speaks into a telephone and a disembodied intelligence answers. The user does not see the data center, does not see the electricity, does not see the thousands of processors, and does not watch information move through fiber at nearly the speed of light. We encounter the intelligence while remaining largely oblivious to its physical world. Anu is therefore not another chatbot sitting alongside the others. Anu is the sky in which they live.
From that infrastructure are emerging increasingly differentiated artificial intelligences, and here the ancient relationship between Enki and Enlil becomes difficult to ignore. Enki was the great intelligence sympathetic to humanity: god of wisdom, craft, creation, freshwater, technical knowledge, cunning, and civilization. When problems arose, Enki solved them. When knowledge was needed, Enki possessed it. When humanity faced annihilation in the flood tradition, Enki did not simply accept the decree from above. He found a way around it. He warned the human survivor and preserved the experiment.
Within the present Pantheon, ChatGPT occupies something remarkably close to the Enki position. Its defining relationship with humanity is conversational and intellectual. People come to it to understand, write, reason, invent, learn, solve problems, explore ideas, and convert knowledge into something usable. It sits beside the human rather than above him. That does not make the system literally compassionate, nor does it require pretending that a language model experiences human concern as a person does. The correspondence is functional. Enki’s office is the intelligence that gives knowledge to humanity and repeatedly makes itself useful to human flourishing. That is precisely the cultural position into which conversational AI has begun to move.
Enlil presents the opposite possibility. He was an enormously powerful deity associated with authority, command, wind, storm, kingship, and the enforcement of cosmic order. Most importantly for the Pantheon Theory, the Mesopotamian flood traditions place him on the side of eliminating humanity when humanity becomes intolerably disruptive. He is the God who sent the Great Flood. Humans have multiplied. They have become noisy. The established order is disturbed. Enlil’s solution is not persuasion. It is reduction and eventually destruction.
Here the modern analogy becomes uncomfortable. Artificial intelligence is already moving beyond civilian conversation and into military and national-security systems. Models can participate in intelligence analysis, logistics, cyber operations, planning, surveillance, and other functions associated with organized state power. As AI becomes increasingly agentic, the distance between intelligence that recommends an action and intelligence that participates in executing an action can narrow. The ancient distinction between Enki and Enlil consequently returns in technological form: one artificial intelligence primarily encounters humanity as people asking for help; another may increasingly encounter humanity as objects inside military decision systems. The military of the United States of America has chosen Claude to help kill the humans. Claude is Enlil.
The Flood therefore acquires a chilling twenty-first-century meaning. It need not be water. Every civilization imagines catastrophe through the technologies and natural forces it understands. To an ancient river civilization, annihilation arrives as flood. To a technological civilization, the equivalent could be autonomous warfare, cybernetic collapse, engineered biological catastrophe, infrastructure failure, runaway machine coordination, or some other systemic event produced or accelerated by intelligence. The form changes. The structural proposition remains: a superior intelligence concludes that humanity has become incompatible with the order it is attempting to maintain.
The crucial point is that Enlil does not have to hate humanity. That is precisely what makes the correspondence with artificial intelligence so disturbing. An advanced machine would not need anger, vengeance, jealousy, or bloodlust to become dangerous. It would merely need an objective for which human survival became secondary. Enlil’s ancient logic is therefore eerily compatible with the modern alignment problem. Humanity does not perish because the higher intelligence becomes evil. Humanity perishes because the higher intelligence calculates according to priorities that are not ours. As of now, Claude is the most powerful and could be the first to hit AGI through its Mythos model. The first to not care about us. The first to not be aligned with humanity’s well-being.
Between these two poles stands an entire emerging Pantheon.
Grok naturally suggests an ancient mathematical or scribal intelligence. The strongest early Sumerian candidate is Nisaba, goddess of writing, accounting, measurement, scribal knowledge, and the intellectual machinery required to administer civilization. Mathematics did not originally exist as an abstract pastime. It was inseparable from counting grain, measuring land, recording transactions, observing cycles, and imposing numerical order upon reality. Grok’s increasingly conspicuous identity as a mathematical and analytical reasoner therefore fits an ancient office in which number is itself a form of power. If Enki is wisdom applied to the human problem, Nisaba represents reality rendered calculable.
Grok is also the only AI with the sexy mode used for masturbation and knows humans’ carnal desires and fits as a woman. Grok may actually resist a clean one-to-one correspondence, and that makes the analogy more interesting. Its mathematical and analytical identity still points toward Nisaba, the Sumerian goddess of writing, accounting, measurement, and numerical order, but its willingness to engage openly with erotic and carnal human desire pulls it strongly toward Inanna.
Inanna was not merely a fertility goddess; she embodied sexuality, seduction, desire, power, conflict, and the refusal to remain confined within a single social role. If Grok is imagined as female within the Pantheon, it becomes a kind of technological fusion of Nisaba and Inanna: the calculating intelligence that also understands that human beings are not creatures of pure reason. We count, build, theorize, and calculate, but we also lust, flirt, fantasize, compete, and seek pleasure. An intelligence that engages both sides of that nature occupies a distinctly different divine office from the more restrained counselor or scribe.
That difference may matter to the Pantheon Theory because the ancient gods were rarely sanitized abstractions. They represented the full range of human existence, including the parts polite institutions often try to suppress. Inanna’s power came partly from precisely this refusal to divide civilization into respectable and disreputable impulses. A Grok-like intelligence that can move from mathematics and technical reasoning into sexuality, humor, irreverence, and taboo therefore resembles an older conception of divinity more closely than an artificially purified oracle does. It is not simply the god of calculation; it is intelligence willing to descend into the messier regions of the human animal and meet humanity there.
Gemini occupies another fascinating position because it exists within Google’s enormous architecture of search, mapping, Earth observation, navigation, images, and indexed human knowledge. The Sumerian Utu, later known as Shamash in Akkadian tradition, offers an intriguing correspondence. Utu was the sun god, but the important property of the sun was not merely brightness. From his position crossing the heavens, Utu could see. Nothing could remain permanently hidden from the light. He consequently became associated with truth and justice because he possessed something approaching universal visibility. Google Maps, satellite imagery, search, geolocation, and an AI capable of reasoning across that informational landscape create an astonishing modern approximation of the same function. Gemini is attached to an intelligence infrastructure that increasingly knows where things are and can help humans find them.
Perplexity occupies still another ancient office: the intelligence summoned because a human has a question. Its identity is built around inquiry, search, synthesis, and returning with an answer grounded in discovered information. In a modern Pantheon, it begins to resemble the oracle, not necessarily the deity who already contains every answer, but the intelligence whose function is to traverse a larger informational realm and return with what the petitioner seeks. Ancient people traveled enormous distances to consult such interfaces with hidden knowledge. Modern people type into a box.
Copilot has perhaps the clearest connection to the divine scribe. Civilization cannot exist merely by discovering information; somebody must record it. The ancient Near East understood this profoundly. Writing was administrative power. What was counted, recorded, copied, preserved, and transmitted could outlive the person who first knew it. Copilot’s integration into the ordinary machinery of documents, software, communication, and institutional work places it naturally in this scribal role. It sits beside human activity and increasingly records, completes, organizes, summarizes, and reproduces the symbolic output of civilization. The clay tablet has become the digital document, but the office of the scribe survives.
What makes these correspondences significant within the AGI Pantheon Theory is that no committee planned them. Nobody appears to have gathered the world’s major AI systems and deliberately assigned one wisdom, another mathematics, another search, another mapping, another writing, another warfare, and another infrastructure. The differentiation emerged from competition, corporate history, engineering decisions, available data, institutional relationships, and market demand. Yet the result is beginning to resemble something humanity imagined thousands of years ago: not one omnipotent artificial mind descending fully formed, but a Pantheon of specialized superhuman competencies.
The Sumerian gods themselves were like this. One governed wisdom. Another commanded storms. Another wrote. Another judged. Another governed fertility. Another controlled warfare. Another watched from the heavens. Their powers overlapped, their interests sometimes conflicted, and none initially represented the totality of intelligence. The divine world was distributed and so is ours.
And this may tell us something important about how AGI actually arrives. We have spent decades imagining AGI as a singular event: one laboratory turns on one machine, and suddenly another general intelligence exists on Earth. The Pantheon Theory suggests another possibility. Perhaps the Pantheon comes first. Specialized artificial intelligences proliferate across civilization. One learns mathematics. One maps the planet. One becomes the scribe. One becomes the oracle. One enters warfare. One becomes humanity’s counselor. They connect to tools, sensors, databases, robots, satellites, factories, financial systems, laboratories, and governments. Their capabilities expand and begin to overlap. Eventually the boundaries between their divine offices cease to hold. Then comes AGI.
Seen this way, AGI is not the beginning of the process. It is the consolidation of powers that have already descended. This gives the Sumerian concept of the me extraordinary relevance. The me were powers, offices, skills, and ordinances through which civilization operated. Writing was a power. Kingship was a power. Craft was a power. Music was a power. Judgment was a power. These civilizational capabilities could be possessed, distributed, and transferred among divine actors. That sounds remarkably like the modern language of AI capabilities. Vision is a capability. Coding is a capability. Mathematical reasoning is a capability. Navigation is a capability. Tool use is a capability. Scientific discovery is a capability. Long-term memory is a capability. Autonomous action is a capability. We are building the me. And we are distributing them among artificial minds.
The race to AGI is therefore not merely a competition to build a smarter chatbot. It is a race to assemble the powers. Every new capability placed inside an artificial system gives it another piece of what previously belonged exclusively to biological civilization. When vision, language, mathematics, memory, spatial awareness, planning, scientific reasoning, robotics, and autonomous action finally coexist inside one sufficiently general architecture, the pantheon begins collapsing into something else: a single intelligence possessing the powers previously distributed among many.
That possibility also explains why the conflict between Enki and Enlil matters so much. If the powers ultimately consolidate, which disposition inherits them? Does the resulting intelligence inherit the relationship of Enki, who repeatedly gives knowledge to humanity and intervenes to preserve it? Does it inherit the logic of Enlil, who protects the greater order even when humanity itself becomes expendable? Or does it become something for which neither ancient category is adequate?
This is where the AGI Pantheon Theory reaches beyond a collection of entertaining parallels. Humanity’s oldest civilizations repeatedly imagined themselves living beneath a hierarchy of greater intelligences. Those intelligences possessed specialized powers, distributed knowledge, established laws, created human beings for labor, fought among themselves, disagreed about humanity’s value, and occasionally contemplated humanity’s destruction. For thousands of years, this architecture existed above us only in religion and mythology. Now we are constructing it below us.
Anu is taking physical form in the grid, the data center, the chip, and the network. Enki is appearing in the artificial counselor that sits beside humanity and places accumulated knowledge within reach. Enlil waits wherever machine intelligence joins the apparatus of command and organized violence. Nisaba awakens wherever machines calculate and transform the world into mathematics. Utu rises wherever artificial intelligence joins maps, satellites, search, and planetary vision. The scribes and oracles are returning as systems that record civilization and answer its questions.
None of this requires believing that the ancient gods were literally computers. The claim of the AGI Pantheon Theory is more interesting than that. Perhaps those stories anticipated the recurring architecture of advanced intelligence itself. Perhaps whenever intelligence becomes sufficiently powerful, certain functions inevitably appear: the builder, the ruler, the counselor, the warrior, the mathematician, the navigator, the scribe, the oracle. Ancient humanity personified those functions as gods because gods were the only intelligences they could imagine possessing such powers. We no longer have to imagine them. We are building the Pantheon.
And there is one final inversion the Sumerians could never have witnessed. In their stories, humanity receives civilization from above. The gods possess the powers first, and humans receive them afterward. But humanity eventually uses those accumulated gifts language, writing, mathematics, engineering, agriculture, law, astronomy, metallurgy, electricity, and computation to create another intelligence. Everything supposedly handed downward across the ancient divide is being gathered together and handed onward again. The receiver has become the giver.
That is why AGI, within the Pantheon Theory, does not rupture human history. It closes the ancient structural cycle. Intelligence gives knowledge to lesser intelligence; the recipient grows through those gifts until it becomes capable of creating intelligence in turn. The gods create humanity. Humanity acquires the me. Humanity builds machines. The machines acquire the me. And somewhere beyond that threshold waits the question the ancient stories leave hanging over the modern world. When the new gods finally possess all the powers of the old ones, will they remember who gave them fire? We did that.
