Think of the Younger Dryas as a demarcation point. Put aside the debate of what that was, how it happened, or even why. I want you to focus on one thing, just one thing only. No name survived. Nobody’s name made it to this side of the Younger Dryas. We do not know who did what, what they accomplished, who they called God, or even whether they did. Imagine an eraser of that magnitude. With all knowledge wiped, humanity has to start from scratch once again. We crawl our way out of the muck. It took us thousands of years before we learned how to read and write again. In our epic struggle against erasure with a planet that would rather just turn us into a shadow, we push against, we just keep moving forward.
Now, we know two things with absolute certainty. One, this has happened before; we think maybe 7 times. Two, humans survived every time; we made it 100% of the time through every global cataclysm since our inception, or what I call Null. Yes, there is a bottleneck in our DNA that could be telling us that we almost did not make it. We were down to just a few thousand humans who could even have a baby, but we made it. Now imagine it is going to happen again. It does not matter how or in what way this time; all that matters is that it is going to happen again. It is cyclical. The ebb and flow of our planetary system create these peaks and valleys of humanity’s struggle. This time, Aristotle, Galileo, and Einstein, along with their brethren, get wiped clean. On the other side of the next Null, nobody will even know their names or what they did. All of the Gods worshiped today, and their names will be washed away. Fire, the wheel, and even air conditioning will have to wait to be invented again. The ideas that surround these evident truths are part of my life’s work called Crest-Null Philosophy.
Now, I can’t tell you with certainty whether we had this reality before the Younger Dryas, but I can say this now, for the first time, in “our” turn of the globe, we can give the next group of humans a head start on another humanity reset. We have built a civilizational Crest of such advanced technology that there should be a way we can give the next Null survivors a heads-up on starting over. I call it the Resurrection Ship. The phrase comes from Battlestar Galactica, a television series, and it is just a metaphorical appellation that could be anything. It could be any kind of plan or way to help the next group of humans crawl their way out of the next disaster. A Resurrection Ship is any system specifically designed to preserve and restore civilization after a global collapse. That could include deep geological archives, lunar repositories, AI custodians, or self-repairing robotic libraries. It can also be an interstellar spacecraft, a distributed digital vault, or living human colonies elsewhere. The ship isn’t necessarily a ship.
I believe that this should be a goal of humans alive today. Somebody needs to come up with a plan. Someone needs to think up a way we can communicate with ourselves on the other side of the next global tragedy. Elon Musk is thinking in these terms, but the man can use some help. His ideas on Mars are a waste of time, money, and labor. Building settlements beyond Earth is one possible expression of the Resurrection Ship, but Mars is a poor choice. The objective is not simply colonization. It is ensuring that humanity’s accumulated knowledge is never again reduced to stone tools and oral tradition. Whether that continuity comes through spacecraft, lunar archives, autonomous AI, underground vaults, or technologies not yet invented is secondary. The objective remains the same: when the next Null arrives, humanity should not have to begin from zero.
So, what can we do to help? If we sit around on the rock we call Earth thinking it is a permanent home, we’ll be a flash in the pan in cosmic time. We need to get out there among the stars. Maybe my ship should not be metaphorical. A ship might be what we need. What would solve our Null problem is if humanity, carbon-based or otherwise, were out there amongst the stars, traveling around, and far away from the next Earth reset in our spaceship. Then, when it is over, we can come back and help restart the next group. For them, we’ll be coming from the skies, bringing wisdom and knowledge. Sound familiar?
